A Date Auction to Benefit Building Young Minds

Just wanted to share this event with you guys if you can attend, I think it would be great to support.

UPLIFT by SAH, the creative fundraising wing of the Sylvia A. Harvey experience, brought you “A Date for Haiti” last year. – Auction starts at 8:00 PM (Silent bidding will be available!)

Brenda Blackmon & The Kelly Fund for Lupus Christmas in July

Celebrating Christmas in July with Brenda Blackmon and her daughter Kelly

In conjunction with the Black Alumni Chapter (BAC)  of Fairleigh Dickinson University Brenda Blackmon hosted a Christmas in July event to raise money for her charity. Lupus is a personal cause for Brenda since her daughter Kelly suffers from the disease. Brenda founded Kelly Fund for Lupus to raise funds and awareness about the disease. She decided to do this event  with BAC because she loves FDU. It should be noted that Brenda is an Alum of FDU as am I. At the event Brenda also had  her new book  “A Mom’s Story” available for purchase.

I got to ask Brenda few questions during the course of the event and this is what she had to say…

Brenda with her daughter

Why Christmas in July?

Brenda: Time to get rid of stuff and make more room for blessings. Lupus is important and raising money for it is important.

What can the average person do to get involved with Lupus?

Brenda: The Kelly Fund for Lupus wants people with lupus to do clinical trails especially black people.  The goal is to educate people. Get rid of stereotypes that people have about the disease.

Brenda also shared some information on the importance of having African participate in these trials.  The drug Benlysta was almost not made due to lack of African-Americans participation  in the clinical trials.

What else have you been up to?

Brenda: Meeting with FDA Advisory Panel . Also met with the genome science program. Will also be meeting with the National Urban League. Raising as much awareness about Lupus as possible. Talking to our people.
What do you want people to know?

Brenda: It’s ok to talk about it. Lupus is a disease that is one day you can have energy and the next day you can’t get out of bed. Lupus can be misinterpreted. It not only makes the person with the disease weary but the family as well.

Brenda: God’s Got It.

United Initiatives for Peace | Raising Money for Haiti & Newark

This Sunday United Initiatives for Peace held a [fund] RAISE HER  to benefit some well deserving young girls.

The  first annual [fund] RAISE HER was held at The Loft in Montclair benefiting college scholarships for girls in NewarkYou Got Schooled” and their summer camp in Haiti (“Bel Kan”).

There were as silent auction will wich included custom converse sneakers and hand-made bracelets made by women in Rwanda. The money raised is much-needed to help these two organizations that are operated without any grants. This was not only a night to raise money but to meet and greet with others who want to make a difference.

There was food,  drinks, music and an atmosphere ripe for conversation. Kudos to UIP on their first annual [fund] RAISE HER!

GMHC Fashion Forward: Charity Event for AIDS awareness & prevention

Recently attended the Fashion Forward event which was a fundraiser for the GMHC

Of  course my client RealBeautyRealWomen.com was there at the red carpet taking pictures and interviewing celebrities. Our host for this event was George Ortiz from Project Runway and the Rachel Ray show. The real reason behind the event wasn’t just to look good and have fun there was a cause attached to this fabulous event.

The GMHC goal with Fashion Forward is to fight to the end of the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected. By combining fashion into the mix you have an event that will attract people to come out and support. [GMHC stands for Gay Men’s Health Crisis] It also offered  the chance for the designer to showcase their lines for the season. The  money raised goes towards to fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic. What a great cause.  And no event in New York is complete without reality TV show crews I spotted crews from Real Housewives of New York to The Cake Boss. This  will provide Fashion Forward with even more exposure and help with their cause. Not only do you experience great fashion you are raising money for a good cause. There was also a silent auction throughout the evening as well as a live action.

The latest statistics of the global HIV and AIDS epidemic were published by UNAIDS in November 2009, and refer to the end of 2008.

Estimate Range
People living with HIV/AIDS in 2008 33.4 million 31.1-35.8 million
Adults living with HIV/AIDS in 2008 31.3 million 29.2-33.7 million
Women living with HIV/AIDS in 2008 15.7 million 14.2-17.2 million
Children living with HIV/AIDS in 2008 2.1 million 1.2-2.9 million
People newly infected with HIV in 2008 2.7 million 2.4-3.0 million
Children newly infected with HIV in 2008 0.43 million 0.24-0.61 million
AIDS deaths in 2008 2.0 million 1.7-2.4 million
Child AIDS deaths in 2008 0.28 million 0.15-0.41 million

More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.

Africa has over 14 million AIDS orphans.

At the end of 2008, women accounted for 50% of all adults living with HIV worldwide

In developing and transitional countries, 9.5 million people are in immediate need of life-saving AIDS drugs; of these, only 4 million(42%) are receiving the drugs.

Now we move on to the fashion

The Master of Ceremonies was Tim Gunn. The fashion show featured designs from Yigal Azrouel, Narciso Rodriguez, Richard Chai, Anna sui, Simon Spurr, and (my favorite) Diane von Furstenberg.
